Type D Power Plug and Outlet

Overview

The Type D power plug and outlet are commonly used in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and several other regions. The plug features three large round prongs, with the top prong serving as a grounding pin for added safety.

Plug and Outlet Design

The Type D plug consists of three large round prongs arranged in a triangular configuration. The two bottom prongs are for live and neutral connections, while the top prong serves as the grounding pin. This plug is typically used in regions with 220-240V electrical systems.

  • Voltage: 220–240V
  • Frequency: 50Hz
  • Prongs: Three round pins (5.5 mm diameter)
  • Grounding pin for added safety

Safety and Compatibility

The Type D plug is safe for use with high-power appliances due to its grounding pin. However, it is not compatible with Type C outlets, which do not have a grounding pin. Adapters can be used to fit Type D plugs into compatible outlets.

It's also important to note the similarity between Type D and Type M plugs, as both feature three large round prongs. However, Type M has slightly larger prongs (approximately 7 mm in diameter) and is used for higher power applications, such as air conditioning units and heavy machinery. Despite their similar appearance, the prong size and power rating make them incompatible with each other without an appropriate adapter.
