What Type G looks like in use

Type G is the safest domestic plug design in wide use: every plug carries its own fuse, the pins are insulated at the base, and the earth pin is longer so that it opens the socket’s shutters before live and neutral make contact.

That shutter mechanism is also why nothing else fits. There is no adapter-free way to put a European or American plug into a British socket.

The plug is bulky because of the fuse, which is why British laptops and chargers feel heavier than their European equivalents.

Watch out: Type G sockets accept Type G plugs only. Travellers from Europe, North America or Australia always need an adapter in the UK.
