What Type I looks like in use

The Australian plug has two flat blades set at an angle like a shallow V, with a straight earth blade below them. It is compact, robust and almost impossible to insert upside down.

China adopted the same shape (with slightly different pin lengths) as its national standard, and Argentina uses an inverted version. Australian and Chinese plugs usually interchange, though certified equipment sometimes fits tightly.

Sockets are switched in Australia and New Zealand, so appliances can be isolated at the wall.

Watch out: Type I sockets accept Type I plugs only. An adapter is required for anything European, American or British.
