Type L Power Plug and Outlet

Overview

The Type L power plug and outlet are primarily used in Italy and Chile. This plug is distinctive for its three inline round prongs, providing both grounding and electrical stability. Type L outlets can accommodate different plug sizes, making them versatile within their intended regions.

Plug and Outlet Design

The Type L plug features three round prongs in a straight line. There are two variants: one with 10A-rated prongs (4 mm diameter) and another with 16A-rated prongs (5 mm diameter), which are not directly interchangeable. Some Type L outlets are designed to accept both sizes, as well as Type C plugs.

  • Voltage: 220–240V
  • Frequency: 50Hz
  • Prongs: Three round pins (inline configuration)
  • Two versions: 10A (smaller prongs) and 16A (larger prongs)
  • Grounding pin for added safety
Countries Using Type L

  • Italy

Safety and Compatibility

Type L plugs are designed for safety, with a grounding pin that provides protection against electrical faults. However, the two versions (10A and 16A) are not interchangeable unless the outlet supports both sizes. In many cases, Type L outlets are designed to accommodate Type C plugs, but Type C outlets do not support Type L plugs.

The unique inline prong arrangement of Type L distinguishes it from other European plugs like Type E and Type F, which use two round prongs with side grounding clips or a grounding hole. Adapters may be required for compatibility with different plug types.
