Type M Power Plug and Outlet

Overview

The Type M power plug and outlet are commonly used in South Africa, India, and some other regions. The plug features three large round prongs arranged in a triangular configuration, with the top prong serving as a grounding pin. Type M is often used for high-power applications.

Plug and Outlet Design

The Type M plug consists of three round prongs, with the live and neutral pins at the bottom and a grounding pin at the top. The prongs are larger than those of Type D, making them suitable for high-current appliances. Type M is commonly used in circuits that require higher amperage.

  • Voltage: 220–240V
  • Frequency: 50Hz
  • Prongs: Three round pins (7 mm diameter)
  • Grounding pin for enhanced safety

Safety and Compatibility

Type M plugs are designed for high-power appliances such as air conditioners, industrial equipment, and heavy-duty electrical devices. Their grounding pin enhances safety by reducing the risk of electrical faults. However, they are not compatible with Type C or Type D outlets without an adapter.

Type M is often mistaken for Type D due to their similar three-prong configuration. However, Type M has larger prongs (7 mm in diameter compared to Type D's 5.5 mm) and is rated for higher currents. While some Type M outlets can accept Type D plugs, the reverse is not true due to the size difference. Always check compatibility before use.
