What Type O looks like in use

Type O is Thailand’s own earthed plug, introduced in 2006 to replace the imported British and American patterns that had accumulated in Thai buildings.

The socket face is designed to accept the Thai O plug alongside American A and B plugs and European Europlugs, which matches what travellers actually find in hotels: a hybrid face that takes almost anything two- or three-pin.

Thai regulations no longer allow earthed appliances to be sold with European Type E or F plugs, because the earth contact would not be made.

Watch out: Thai hybrid sockets often accept Type A, B, C and O. British Type G plugs, common in older buildings, need an adapter.
